Be Prepared

Common Emergencies And How to Respond Before Your Visit

Dental emergencies rarely come with a warning. How you react in those critical first moments can make a real difference in the outcome. Below are the emergencies we treat most frequently and what you can do right now before heading to our office.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown only and avoid touching the root. If it needs rinsing, use clean water briefly, but do not scrub or remove any tissue still attached. If possible, gently reposition the tooth into its socket and hold it in place by biting down on a soft, clean cloth. If reinsertion is not an option, keep the tooth moist in a small container of milk or hold it against the inside of your cheek. Every minute counts. Call us immediately because the faster we treat it, the better your chances of saving the tooth.
Rinse your mouth carefully with warm water and press a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Save any fragments you can recover and bring them to your visit. Avoid chewing on the affected side and reach out to us as soon as possible.
Rinse with warm salt water to help ease inflammation. Use floss carefully to remove anything that might be lodged between teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort until your appointment. Do not apply aspirin directly to the gum tissue, as this can burn the soft tissue.
If a crown has fallen off, try placing it back over the tooth using a small amount of denture adhesive or toothpaste to hold it temporarily. For a lost filling, a piece of sugar-free gum or temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the exposed surface. Stick to chewing on the other side and call us so we can restore it properly.
Use dental floss gently to work around the area and dislodge the object. Do not use sharp instruments or metal tools, as these can damage your gums or enamel. If floss does not resolve it, call us and we will remove it safely in our office.
For cuts or tears to your lips, tongue, cheeks, or gums, rinse gently with a mild salt water solution and apply steady pressure using clean gauze or a damp cloth. Maintain pressure for 15 to 20 minutes without releasing. If bleeding has not slowed after that time, go to the nearest emergency room or contact us for further guidance.

Every Minute Matters When It Comes to Saving Your Smile

When You Need Us Most

What to Expect During Your Emergency Visit

A dental emergency is overwhelming, and uncertainty about what happens next only adds to the stress. Here is exactly how we handle urgent visits at our Southfield office so you feel informed and prepared from the moment you arrive.
1

Targeted Exam and Advanced Imaging

We bring you back right away and focus on the area causing you pain. Using our CBCT 3D imaging (Kavo) and digital scanner, we get a detailed look at what is going on below the surface. Whether the issue involves a fracture, an infection, or nerve damage, our imaging technology gives us a clear and accurate diagnosis so we can move forward without guessing.
2

Immediate Treatment and Pain Relief

Once we identify the problem, treatment begins right away. Many emergency procedures, including extractions, temporary restorations, and same-day solutions from our on-site lab, can be completed in one visit. We also provide sedation options to keep you calm and comfortable throughout your treatment.
3

Recovery Instructions and Follow-Up Plan

Before you head home, we go over everything you need for a smooth recovery. That means clear aftercare instructions, guidance on any medications, and a detailed plan for follow-up care if further treatment is necessary. You leave our office with no unanswered questions and a clear path forward.

Skilled Emergency Care When Every Minute Counts

Frequently Asked Questions

Emergency Dental Care Questions

A dental emergency can happen without warning, and knowing what to do makes all the difference. Here are the answers to the questions patients ask most when they need urgent care. When in doubt, call us right away.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe tooth pain, a knocked-out or broken tooth, uncontrolled bleeding, swelling in your face or jaw, and infections that cause fever are all dental emergencies. If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies, call us. We’d always rather hear from you and help you decide.
Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep it moist in milk or saline. Then call us immediately. The faster you get here, the better the chance of saving it.
We make every effort to see emergency patients the same day you call. Dental pain and trauma don’t wait, and neither should your care. Call us as soon as the issue arises and our team will work to get you in as quickly as possible.
Rinse gently with warm salt water, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and apply a cold compress to your cheek if there’s swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as this can burn the tissue. These steps can help manage discomfort until we see you.
In many cases, yes. The treatment depends on how much of the tooth is damaged and whether the nerve is affected. We may repair it with bonding, protect it with a crown, or recommend other options based on the situation. Bring any broken pieces with you if possible.
A dental abscess forms when bacteria infect the inner pulp of a tooth or surrounding gum tissue. It often results from untreated decay, a cracked tooth, or gum disease. Abscesses don’t resolve on their own and require professional treatment to prevent the infection from spreading.
For dental issues, we can almost always provide faster and more targeted care than an ER. Emergency rooms typically manage pain and prescribe antibiotics but can’t perform dental procedures. Call us first. If your situation involves trauma to other parts of your face or head, the ER is the right first step.
It’s not always an emergency, but you should call us promptly. A missing filling or crown exposes the tooth to sensitivity, further damage, and decay. As a temporary measure, you can cover the area with dental cement from a pharmacy until we can see you.
Wearing a custom mouth guard during sports, avoiding chewing on ice or hard objects, and keeping up with regular dental visits all reduce your risk significantly. Many emergencies start as small problems that could have been caught and treated during a routine checkup.
Yes. We understand that emergencies demand quick attention. Our Southfield office reserves time in our schedule for urgent cases, so we can see you the same day whenever possible. Call us and we’ll do everything we can to get you into the chair right away.
