Sound Familiar?
If any of this sounds like your situation, you're not out of options. A sinus lift in Southfield may be the step that changes what's possible for you.
The Window Doesn't Stay Open
Bone loss continues
The upper jaw keeps losing density the longer teeth are missing.
Fewer implant sites available
Shrinkage can limit where implants can be placed at all.
Treatment becomes more complex
A more involved procedure may be required down the line.
Costs increase over time
More bone loss typically means more extensive preparation work.
Years pass without resolution
Temporary solutions keep getting extended without a real fix in place.
Options narrow quietly
What's straightforward today may not be as simple a year from now.
Acting sooner keeps your treatment simpler and your outcome more predictable.
What Is a Sinus Lift, and How Does It Work?
A sinus lift is a bone grafting procedure that adds bone volume to the upper jaw in the area just below the sinus cavity (the air-filled space above your upper back teeth). When teeth are lost, the jawbone in that area tends to shrink over time, and the sinus can expand downward, leaving too little bone to support a dental implant. A sinus lift gently lifts the sinus membrane upward and places bone grafting material in the space created, allowing new bone to grow and create a stable foundation for implant placement.
At Icon Dental Implant Center, we plan every sinus lift using CBCT 3D imaging by Kavo, which gives us a precise, three-dimensional view of your jaw structure and sinus anatomy before we begin. For patients considering sinus lift in Southfield, this level of pre-treatment planning means fewer surprises, more accurate placement, and a smoother overall process from start to finish.

What to Expect During Your Sinus Lift
Pre-Procedure Planning
Before anything begins, we capture a full 3D image of your jaw and sinus structure using our Kavo CBCT scanner. This lets us map out the exact approach for your anatomy, so nothing is left to guesswork. You'll also have a detailed conversation with your doctor about what to expect, including sedation options available to keep you comfortable.
Day-of Preparation
On the day of your procedure, the treatment area is thoroughly numbed before we begin. If you've chosen sedation, that will be administered first so you're completely relaxed. You won't feel anything sharp; most patients describe a sense of pressure at most during this phase.
Sinus Membrane Elevation and Bone Grafting
A small opening is made in the gum tissue to access the area beneath the sinus floor. The sinus membrane is gently lifted, and bone grafting material is placed in the space created. The site is then closed, and the healing process begins. The entire procedure typically takes one to two hours per side.
Healing and Bone Development
Over the following months, new bone gradually fills in around the grafting material, building the density needed to support implants. Most patients return to normal activity within a few days. Your team will monitor your progress at scheduled follow-up visits throughout this phase.
Implant Placement
Once sufficient bone has developed, typically several months after the sinus lift, you'll be ready for implant placement. At that point, the foundation we built together makes it possible to place implants with confidence and precision.

What Recovery Looks Like After a Sinus Lift
First 24-48 Hours
Some swelling and mild discomfort are normal in the first day or two, and most patients manage well with over-the-counter or prescribed medication. Rest is recommended, and you'll want to avoid blowing your nose or any activity that creates sinus pressure. Cold compresses can help keep swelling down during this window.
First 1-2 Weeks
Swelling typically peaks around day two or three and then gradually subsides. Soft foods are encouraged during this period, and strenuous activity should be limited. Most patients find they're back to light daily routines within a few days, with the main restriction being care around the sinus area.
Long-Term Healing
The bone development phase takes several months, though this part of healing is largely passive. You'll have follow-up visits so we can track progress and confirm when you're ready for the next stage. Most patients don't experience significant disruption to daily life during this period.
