At what age should my child have their first orthodontic evaluation?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation around age seven. By this point, enough permanent teeth have come in to give a clear picture of how the bite and jaw are developing. Earlier isn’t necessarily better, but waiting much longer can mean missing the ideal window for simpler intervention.

Does an early evaluation mean my child will need braces right away?

Not at all. Many children who come in for an early evaluation don’t need any treatment at the time. The purpose is to assess development and catch potential issues early, not to begin treatment immediately. You may simply leave with a monitoring plan and a recommendation to return in six to twelve months.

What happens during the evaluation?

How long does the evaluation take?

Do both parents need to be present?

Only one parent or guardian needs to attend, though both are always welcome.
