If you’re missing most or all of your teeth, you already know how it affects everyday life. Eating becomes difficult. Speaking feels uncertain. Smiling in public takes effort you shouldn’t have to think about. Traditional dentures help, but they come with their own frustrations: slipping, adhesives, sore spots, and food restrictions that never seem to end.
All-on-4 dental implants offer a different path. Instead of removable dentures that sit on top of your gums, this approach gives you a full arch of fixed teeth supported by just four strategically placed implants. The result is a set of teeth that look, feel, and function like the ones you were born with.
How All-on-4 Dental Implants Work
The concept behind All-on-4 is straightforward. Four titanium implant posts are placed into your jawbone at precise angles. Two go in the front of the jaw, where bone density is naturally thicker. Two are angled in the back, which maximizes contact with available bone and often eliminates the need for bone grafting.
Once the implants are placed, a full set of custom teeth is attached directly to them. In many cases, you can leave our office with a temporary set of functioning teeth the same day as your procedure. Your permanent restoration is fabricated after your implants have fully integrated with the jawbone, a natural process called osseointegration (where titanium fuses with living bone) that typically takes a few months.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
All-on-4 dental implants work well for patients who are missing all or most of their teeth on one or both arches. You may be a strong candidate if:
- You currently wear full dentures and want something permanent
- You have teeth that are failing and need a full-arch solution
- You’ve been told you don’t have enough bone for traditional implants
- You want fixed teeth without the long timeline of individual implant placement
One of the biggest advantages of the All-on-4 approach is that it often works for patients with moderate bone loss. The angled placement of the back two implants uses existing bone more efficiently, which means many patients who were previously told they couldn’t get implants may actually qualify.
During your consultation, we take a CBCT 3D scan to map your jawbone in detail. This imaging lets us plan the exact position of each implant before the procedure begins, giving you a predictable outcome with fewer surprises.
All-on-4 vs. Traditional Dentures
The difference between All-on-4 implants and traditional dentures comes down to stability and quality of life.
Traditional dentures rest on your gums and rely on suction or adhesive to stay in place. Over time, the jawbone beneath them shrinks because there are no tooth roots to stimulate it. This means your dentures gradually lose their fit, leading to relines, adjustments, and eventually replacements.
All-on-4 implants are anchored in bone. They don’t move, don’t require adhesive, and they actually help preserve your jawbone by providing the stimulation it needs. You can eat steak, bite into an apple, and laugh without worrying about anything shifting. For most patients, this is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The All-on-4 process starts with a detailed consultation and 3D imaging at our Southfield, MI office. We use advanced CBCT imaging (Kavo) and digital scanning to create a precise surgical plan.
On the day of your procedure, any remaining teeth are removed if necessary. The four implants are placed, and a temporary set of teeth is secured to them. We offer sedation dentistry options to keep you comfortable throughout.
You’ll follow a modified diet during the initial healing phase while your implants integrate with the bone. After a few months, you’ll return for your final permanent restoration, custom-designed and fabricated in our on-site lab using our Sprintray 3D printer for precise fit and natural appearance.
The Long-Term Value
All-on-4 dental implants are an investment, but the long-term value is significant. Unlike dentures that need replacing every 5 to 7 years, a well-maintained implant-supported arch can last decades. Daily care is simple: brush, rinse, and keep up with regular checkups.
You also avoid the ongoing costs of denture adhesives, reline appointments, and replacement sets. When you factor in durability, function, and the confidence that comes with permanent teeth, most patients find that All-on-4 pays for itself over time.
